Students need to have the moraine on the brain.

Elementary and high schools are bringing the outdoors into the classroom with a program allowing students to learn more about the importance of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

A 45-minute class presentation with an educational consultant is the latest program run by the Oak Ridges Moraine   Foundation.

It leaves students with a better understanding of what the moraine is, how it works and what they need to do to protect it.

“Young children and students will be our ambassadors of the environment well into the future,” foundation executive director Kim Gavine said.

“The purpose of the program is to educate schoolchildren about the importance of the Oak Ridges Moraine, how it was created and its significance for ground water resources.”

Running the program is possible because of the $15-million grant from the province in 2002 that was given to the foundation for a variety of initiatives, one of which is education outreach.

So far, the organization has funded 25 classroom visits and has just confirmed an additional 25 more, at a cost of $19,000. The program has achieved great success since its launch in November last year., organizers say.
