The Bradford West Gwillimbury fire department has leased a pumper truck — for now.

Town council approved the department temporarily leasing a 1992 E-One custom cab pumper until its new truck arrives next year.

The fire department was forced to lease an interim pumper truck following the chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of United States company American LaFrance earlier this year.

The company was hired two years ago to build a new pumper for the fire department.

Part of the contract with American LaFrance stipulated it lend the Bradford West Gwillimbury fire department a pumper truck until its new one arrived.

However, in July, American LaFrance came to retrieve its loaned truck, leaving the fire department no alternative but to lease another one.

The pumper will cost between $9,000 and $10,500, plus taxes, to lease for the next six to seven months, at which time the department’s new truck should arrive.
