Wal-Mart is hiring more than 250 people for its Bradford West Gwillimbury Supercentre location, which is expected to open early next year.

As of their fourth week of accepting applications from prospective employees, managers at the Wal-Mart hiring office on Holland Street West had interviewed more than 600 people, including former factory workers, stay-at-home moms looking to re-enter the workforce and students who want to get some work experience.

“The community’s been very welcoming,” manager Mark Rodrigues said.

In order to be hired by Wal-Mart, whether it be as a cashier, sales associate or stock person, all applicants must possess a few key traits.

“Wal-Mart hires based on attitude and a willingness and eagerness to learn and grow,” Mr. Rodrigues said. “We’re not concentrating on people with retail background...We have a great training program.”

However, her retail background is exactly what resident Susy Jarvis is hoping will land her a full-time position at Wal-Mart.

Ms Jarvis found herself unemployed after spending four years at Wacky Wizard Dollar Store, which recently closed its doors.

“We don’t hire at minimum wage; we hire above that,” Mr. Rodrigues said, noting employees also receive a myriad of benefits.

Minimum wage in Ontario is currently $8.75 an hour.

Anyone interested in applying for a job at Wal-Mart can do so at its hiring office, located at 23 Holland St. W., Bradford, until the end of November.

The office is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When applying, you need to bring a resume and be prepared to be interviewed.
