Two witnesses have approached York Regional Police claiming to have seen a King man just before he was struck and killed while walking on Hwy. 11 Monday night, an investigator said.
The witnesses were to be interviewed Wednesday night.
“We have some idea of what has occurred and that’s why we have to speak to the witnesses,” traffic Sgt. Tim Kuttschrutter said.
On Monday at about 10:20 p.m., police were called to Hwy. 11 south of Bradford after a report a man had been struck on the highway.
Daniel Orantes, 24, of King Township was walking east on Hwy. 11 in the traffic lanes when he was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Mr. Orantes was then hit by a second eastbound vehicle driven by a motorist who left the scene, police said.
He was taken to the hospital and died.
“We are still looking for that person,” Sgt. Kuttschrutter said, describing the vehicle as a dark, four-door Oldsmobile Cutlass or Pontiac Grand Prix-type vehicle, he said.
No charges have been laid in the case as of Wednesday.
If you are walking near the road, Sgt. Kuttschrutter urges you to be visible.
“If you’re out running at night, you don’t where black because you can blend in,” he said.
He also suggested wearing reflective clothing or attaching accessories, such as reflective bracelets or anklets, to your body while near the road.
