It started with the washrooms. The Unionville’s Library’s washrooms didn’t meet provincial requirements for people with disabilities, so renovations began that eventually encompassed enough work to close the branch, on Library Lane, for two months.
“The new washrooms are more spacious, with automatic doors, adult changing table and an emergency device in case someone faints or needs help,” library manager Patrick Pan said.
The fix also provided the library with wireless Internet, new paint and furnishings as well eco-friendly carpet.
“We hired a contractor to take away all the old carpet and fully recycle it,” Mr. Pan said.
The bill for all this wasn’t available at press time.
The branch opened in the 1980s and Mr. Pan said wear and tear needed fixing. It’s part of an expansion and renovation program throughout the system.
“The big new architectural element would be the golden oak colour with wooden gables around the centre court,” library strategy director Deborah Walker said.
“Golden oak goes with the elements of the building and choice of carpet. We tried to pick paint colours that would be modern, but still lively. We ended up with a shade of blue and green we are very pleased with.”
