A burning wicker chair, a 10-year-old boy and an award all have a Markham twist.
Michael Taylor received a fire safety award in Toronto from the Fire Marshal of Ontario for preventing a fire.
Michael spotted a wicker chair in flames on the porch of a neighbour’s home and informed his mother and older brother.
While Michael’s brother called 911, Michael and his mother went to the home, found no one home, then found a garden hose and put the fire out.
“Michael’s quick thinking to have someone call the fire department helped to prevent a potential large and devastating fire,” Fire Marshal Pat Burke said.
Nominees for the annual Fire Safety Awards come from fire departments throughout the province.
This year, 17 recipients were selected.
