The body of a Markham man was recovered Sunday from the Trent River in Hastings, east of Peterborough.

The unidentified man and a friend, from Scarborough, were fishing near a lock. After landing a fish, the man slipped from the edge and disappeared, Northumberland OPP Const. Chris Dewsbury said.

The waterway, which feeds into Rice Lake, is reported to have a fast current due to the excessive summer rainfall.

The two men were fishing some 20 yards apart, Const. Dewsbury said. The friend alerted police at 4 a.m. Sunday.

An OPP helicopter, marine unit and underwater search and recovery unit responded. The man’s body was recovered at 12:30 p.m.

Police have not released details pending notification of next of kin.
