York Regional Police are urging pedestrians to obey traffic signals after a man was struck and killed while walking in Markham Friday evening.

At about 9:30 p.m., a 57-year-old Markham man was crossing north to south on the east side of Major Mackenzie Drive East at McCowan Road when he was clipped by an eastbound Honda Civic, York Regional Police said.

The man, apparently crossing against the traffic signals, died after suffering injuries in the collision, police said.

His name is not being released at the request of his family.

Police believe the Civic was proceeding through a green light. None of the four passengers in the Civic were injured.

Charges are not expected.

If you saw the collision, call traffic investigators at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7703, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or leave a tip at www.1800222tips.com
