Everyone needs someone to laugh with, share a dream with, and just hang out with.

That’s the philosophy of Big Brothers Big Sisters of York, a charitable organization founded in 1970.

Their 14th annual gala is on Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Angus Glen Golf Club (Kennedy Road and Major Mackenzie Drive) in Markham.

The event will include a silent auction with a myriad of prizes, including a cell phone, power tools, meals, a round of golf, golf clubs, a mountain bike, Toronto Raptor tickets, a hockey stick signed by Curtis Joseph, a Swiss watch, spa treatments and more.

Up for grabs in a live auction is a fishing trip with a professional fisherman, Ottawa Senators tickets, a week at a cottage, wine tasting and more.

Some 275 people are expected at this year’s event, according to Maddy Nichol, manager of fund development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of York.

The organization matches mentors with children, usually between 6 and 16.  The duos have one-on-one time and participate in activity evenings where everyone meets in a group.

These Big Brothers, Big Sisters partnerships are a long-running tradition pioneered by a Cincinnati businessman in the early 1900s.
