When children go back to school, it doesn’t take long to make friends at recess.
But for the stay-at-home mom who sends them off to school in the morning, making friends is not that easy — there’s no mommy recess.
The Newcomers Group for Newmarket and Aurora wants to change that by offering a place where women in the area can meet others in the same situation.
Laura Stratton moved to Ontario from New Brunswick and settled in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area before moving to Aurora with her family a few years ago.
“It’s isolated not knowing anyone just to go for coffee or a walk,” said Mrs. Stratton, the group’s vice-president. “How do you meet friends as an adult? Men have their hockey ... ”
While she was working from home, she started digging around on the Internet and came across the Newcomers of Canada group. Mrs. Stratton set off to make life-long friends.
The group meets once a month for women-only activities, such as games and poker nights, mini golf and wine and cheese nights.
“Women often get involved with their husbands’ things, like business parties and events,” said Angela Ellis, the club president. “This is for us ladies.”
With more than 20 members each year, getting out and making friends is easy.
“It’s not just about meeting people,” Mrs. Ellis said. “It’s about getting out and learning about the new area.”
The first meeting of the year is Sept. 17.
