Nic Grasby scored his second goal of the game with five seconds remaining to lift the Halton Hills Bulldogs to a 6-5 victory over the Newmarket Saints Saturday night in Georgetown to complete a three-game sweep of an Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B East Conference quarter-final playoff series. 

Newmarket tied the game 5-5 with 59 seconds to go as Shawn Beer notched his second goal of the contest.

Kingston, Burlton rule pool at provincial meet
Brandon Kingston and Graham Burlton of the Newmarket Stingrays dominated freestyle events in their age groups at the 2008 junior provincial long course swimming championships held last weekend in Thunder Bay.

Competing in the boys 16 to 17 age category, Kingston won the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle events. He also added a second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle and the 400 individual medley.
In the boys 12-year-old category, Burlton swept the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle races. He added silver in the 100 breaststroke and bronze in the 100 backstroke.

Clubmates Jeffrey Swanston and Shannon Cumiskey also got in on the winning act.

Swanston (boys 14) won the 100 and 200 backstroke while Cumiskey (girls 13) won the 50 freestyle and finished third in the 100 freestyle.

Guggino good as gold with judo title win
Renee Guggino of Newmarket claimed a decision after an extra round over Jade Parsons of Orillia to capture her third gold medal in as many years at the Canadian national junior judo championships in Mississauga.

Competing in the women’s under-52 kilograms category, the second-degree black belt and national team member, battled through eight scoreless minutes against Parsons for her third victory at the competition.

The victory marked the fourth in six seasons as a juvenile and junior competitor for Guggino.

Ducks’ Silverthorn glitters with win
Jake Silverthorn of the Aurora Ducks raced to victory in the 100-metre butterfly to highlight a three-medal haul at the 2008 provincial long course swimming championships in Thunder Bay last weekend.

Silverthorn also claimed a silver medal in the 200 butterfly and bronze in the 800 freestyle.

Prowling Panthers ink defenceman to deal
Newmarket resident James DeLory has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Florida Panthers, the National Hockey League club announced last week.

The 19-year-old DeLory was a fourth-round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2006 draft.

The six-foot, four-inch, 235-pound defenceman has played for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League for the past three seasons where he has compiled 62 points, including four goals and 21 assists last season.

He also has 385 penalty minutes in 189 games.
