The Markham Jaguars saw their reign as defending national midget girls’ softball champions come to an end when they suffered a 2-1 loss to the eventual champion Surrey Storm 90 in their championship semifinal game last Sunday at Stellarton, N.S.

Led by the pitching tandem of Jenna Caira and Katie Woodcock, the Jaguars sported a 6-0 won-loss record in round-robin action after recording victories over the Edmonton ‘89 Warriors 3-2, Rebelles ‘89 (Quebec) 8-0, New Brunswick Vitos 5-0, P.E.I. Gators 10-0, Manitoba Angels 1-0 in eight innings and Cole Harbour Comets (Nova Scotia) 5-1.

In those contests, Caira tossed three no hitters while Woodcock had two.

In quarter-final action last Saturday, the Jaguars required 11 innings to eliminate the Whitby Eagles (Ontario #2) 2-1.

Caira, who attends Syracuse University this fall on a softball scholarship, went the entire 11 innings and threw a no hitter while striking out 12 batters to earn the win.

The Storm 90 won the championship with a 2-1 win over the White Rock Renegades (B.C. 2) in the title tilt.
