Police remind you to make sure you lock your homes, garages and outbuildings and secure the keys to your vehicles after a number of overnight thefts, especially in the Newmarket area.

Between Oct. 2 and 11, York Regional Police received 10 reports of thefts from unlocked garages in Newmarket.

Property was stolen from vehicles, gasoline and other liquids being poured on vehicles and, in one instance, hate graffiti written on the window of a vehicle.

The more difficult you make it for a thief to break into your home or garage, the more likely he or she will move along, police said.

By following these crime prevention thefts, you can avoid becoming a victim of theft:

• Lock your doors and windows when leaving the house and at night before retiring for bed ;

• Secure all keys and do not leave them hanging on a visible hook at entrances to your home;

• Secure all basement and ground-level windows and patio doors.  Use protective glass or window film where possible.  Never leave accessible windows open, especially while sleeping.  Consider installing dead-bolt locks and self-tapping screws on all exterior doors and in patio doors and windows;

• Trim all shrubs and trees so doors and windows are in clear view;

• Give your home the lived-in look, with automatic timers and sensors for lighting;

• Be aware of suspicious people or vehicles in your neighbourhood and call police immediately if concerned and;

• Consider starting a Neighbourhood Watch program in your community
