Scott Roskar remembers when the Stouffville Dart League had a healthy number of participants who played out of eating establishments during the evening hours in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
These days though, the Stouffville resident knows that isn’t the case.
As owner of The Earl of Whitchurch, a Main Street pub that plays host to league games, Roskar knows membership is at just 45 players including anywhere from four to six women.
“The population in our league is getting older and those that have left did so because they did not want to go out in the winter time just to play darts,” Mr. Roskar said. “At the same time, the competition hasn’t been fun for the good players.”
Despite the dwindling membership base, he remains optimistic a league revival can occur.
In doing so, he wants to spread the word, especially to new residents in the area, that the league is preparing for a new season.
The league, which has been around for the 20 years, plays out of local restaurants primarily on Tuesday evenings.
With growth, they could also play on Wednesday evenings.
“If all of the restaurants had two teams each, we could have 12 or more teams with a minimum of six players per team,” he said. “It would be nice to get two leagues going again with an A and B leagues playing on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.”
Making the game enticing, he speculated, is the team element that’s involved. Not to mention the socializing.
