Looking for a better way to help schools raise funds, beyond selling chocolate bars and magazines, a new company has turned to the green movement.

Green Students, an organization started by two university graduates and now partnered with a Richmond Hill woman, is a program devoted to spreading environmental awareness to schools.

The program presents a multifaceted innovation to fundraising and tries to revitalize fundraising by getting kids excited about being environmentally conscious at a young age, said Michelle Boigon, who grew up in Richmond Hill and has joined the Green Students team.

The organization gets children excited about what they are selling by providing them with order sheets for energy-efficient products such as light bulbs, Kleen Kanteens and dryer balls, instead of the usual chocolate bars and magazines, she added.

The goal is to teach students about being environmentally responsibe by providing each school with lesson plans and activities designed to reinforce the concepts of the program.

Company co-founders Corey Berman and Mike Maier have introduced their program to some Toronto schools and hope to have success in York Region.

As another perk to their organization’s new reputation, the Toronto board has selected Green Students as the suggested fundraiser included in guide sent out to its 550 schools.

Green Students has also been involved in Nelly Furtado’s endorsement in the Flick Off commercial promoting awareness for damages done to our environment.

Most recently, Green Students display details of the program at an environment awareness event with David Suzuki, at the Bloor Cinema last month, about The Solution is in our Nature.
