South Asian culture will be front and centre at the City Playhouse on Saturday, November 15, as Social Service Network’s Youth Advisory Committee presents Ektaa “Unity Within Diversity”.
Ektaa is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘oneness’ or ‘unity’ and in this case it translates to a South Asian youth multicultural event showcasing the talents through various media such as music, theatre, poetry and a fusion of contemporary and traditional South Asian dances.
Performers will be between the ages of six and 27 and the event is organized in the spirit of preserving the South Asian culture, but also integrating traditions within a Canadian lifestyle.
“This presentation is done by the youth for the youth.”
“This presentation is done by the youth for the youth,” said Dr. Charanjit Bambra, the executive director of Social Service Network.
Youth performers will be addressing social issues through the medium of fine art that will represent 14 South Asian communities.
Dr. Bambra said he hopes that offering a creative outlet such as this encourages youth to have the freedom for personal expression in an engaging manner that other youths can relate to and even take part in.
Refreshments will be served and two raffles will be held.
The City Playhouse is located at 1000 New Westminster Dr. in Vaughan and the performance will begin at 7 p.m. and is expected to finish around 9 p.m.
Early bird tickets are being sold for $10 and tickets at the door will be sold for $15.
For tickets call the Social Services Network office at 905-940-7864.
