At the heart of any business is its people.

That is it is hard to understand the shabby treatment of about 2,400 workers who were locked out of their jobs last week at a local plastics company — without warning, without notice, without severance pay.

Many workers at Progressive Moulded Ltd. in Concord told us they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

As disturbing as this is, what’s worse is that any money the financially troubled company has is first being paid to the banks, instead of the people.

In our humble opinion, the banks can wait.

It has already been a week since workers learned they were out of a job. And the end of the month has come and gone, when many payments are due.

The federal government can ensure that workers get their fair due by instructing the company to pay them first. This would, after all, be in keeping with the reform of the bankruptcy and insolvency act, part of which puts unpaid wage claims ahead of secured creditors.
