PRIDE OF AURORA TOUR |
If there are two things Aurora is proud of, they are the community’s
rich history and small-town atmosphere. In truth, these things go hand
in hand, and make a pleasant tour of the town.
Beginning at the centre of it all…

|
Historic Yonge Street |
Yonge Street is the historic and spiritual heart of the community. The
many heritage buildings lining Yonge allow visitors to pull back the
curtain of Aurora’s past and envision what it was like to live and work
in the 19th century. But beyond history, this is the commercial core of
the town, a vibrant blend of retail outlets and restaurants. Visitors
can easily lose themselves for several hours. Yonge Street is the sight
of a major street festival each June, billed as “the world’s largest”.
….then visit one of the most historic homes in Aurora…

Hillary House |
A National Historic Site, Hillary House is one of those fabled places
where the clock stands still. Built in 1862 by Dr. Walter Geikie, the
building served as a residence and surgery to successive physicians
until 1936. It was purchased in 1981 by the Aurora Historical Society
to serve as a museum to celebrate the town’s rich architectural,
medical, and societal history. Each room in the home reflects a
different era, while prized displays include numerous 19th century
surgical instruments, including an American Civil War amputation kit.
