A group of 24 students at Keswick High decided to do something positive with their free time this year and hope they’ve started something that will continue to grow among other youth in Georgina.
“I just thought it would be fun to bring some of my classmates together to dance as a group,” said this year’s So You Think You Can Dance champion and the group’s founder, Derick Robinson.
“The group, known as Xclusiv, started with 11 of my friends, but word spread quickly.
“We decided to open the group up to more of our peers. We held a week- long audition at the school that included a performance to a choreographed piece of music.”
The original members got together and selected 10 new dancers to be a part of Xclusiv, Robinson added.
The dance group consists of 23 students who frequently hang out after school and have barbecues at each other’s houses.
The talented youth were also pumped because they were asked to perform at their school’s Christmas celebration this year.
“These students are really taking their own initiative,” said English teacher Kate Potosky.
“Their love for dance is growing and they’re having so much fun with it.
“Our dance room used to be free a lot of the time, but now it’s in use every morning, every lunch and every day after school.”
