A pair of York Region residents helped Canada capture the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Soccer Championship with a 1-0 win over the United States Saturday in Puebla, Mexico.

Stouffville resident Tina Romagnuolo, 18, and Thornhill resident Rita Keimakh, 18, were midfielders for Team Canada.

Team Canada went undefeated as they recorded victories over Nicaragua 2-0, Jamaica 3-1, Costa Rica 4-0 and Mexico 2-1 en route to the final.

The win by Canada marked the second time in three tries that they’ve won the women’s youth confederation championship. The first time was in 2004 when the tournament was held in Canada.

In the 2006 championship played in Mexico, Canada finished second behind the United States.

Canada also qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Chile 2008 which runs Nov. 19 to Dec. 7.

Since the tournament’s inception at Canada 2002, Canada has participated in every FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
