Mennos rally then hold off Newmarket
The Stouffville Mennos scored two runs in their half of the fifth inning to break a tie and stave off a rally by the Newmarket Stingers to emerge with a 4-3 win Thursday in a rescheduled Oshawa City and District Fastball League game at Memorial Park.
With the score knotted at 2-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Rich Burkholder drew a walk and advanced on a single by Shawn Boadway.
Dale Boadway followed with a single that scored Burkholder. Jay Nesbitt hit a sacrifice fly that scored Shawn Boadway to give the Mennos a 4-2 lead.
The Stingers put a scare into the Mennos in their half of the seventh inning by scoring a run to cut the deficit to 4-3 and had a base runner in scoring position.
But Byron Baranieski, who came in to pitch the final frame in relief of starter Greg Dalgarno, got the final out on a strikeout to earn the save.
The Mennos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Shawn Boadway doubled and scored on a run-scoring single by Scott Eyre.
In the fourth inning, the Mennos added another run when Nesbitt drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Boyd. Dalgarno then drove in Nesbitt with a single.
The Stingers came back in the fifth with two runs to tie the game and set the stage for the Mennos’ rally in their half of the frame.
Dalgarno struck out eight batters in his six innings of work to earn the win.
Now 8-4, the Mennos will play on the road Tuesday against Lake Simcoe and return to Memorial Park to host the Stingers Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Vincec impressive in Belgium
Mike Vincec’s made an auspicious debut on the European Karting Championship circuit last weekend in Belgium.
Taking to the track for two races, the 17-year-old Stouffville resident gave a good account of himself.
Leading up to last Saturday’s first race, Vincec showed progress in five heat races after finishing 14th, ninth, eighth, 11th and seventh.
Starting from the 23rd position, he finished the race in 11th place.
In Sunday’s race, Vincec began in the fifth before he was knocked off the course and fell back to 11th. He caught up to the pack and thought he finished in 10th place. But a penalty elevated him into ninth place when the official results were posted later.
