Ball hockey Vipers triumph in double OT
Michael Strumos scored the winning goal at 2:34 of the second overtime period to lift the Newmarket Vipers to a 4-3 victory over Brampton in the Novice division final of the Metro Cup ball hockey tournament in Mississauga.
Tony Greco, Josh Tardif and Tyler Ritchie also scored for the Newmarket Minor Ball Hockey Association all-star squad, which posted a 2-0-1 record in its three games, including an earlier 4-3 win over Brampton and a 2-2 tie against Vaughan.
NSC’s all-star soccer tourney resumes today
Championship play grabs the spotlight today as the Newmarket Soccer Club’s 11th annual All-Star Tournament kicks off with title matches starting at 9 a.m. at George Richardson Park.
The two-day event began yesterday with 105 teams in 20 divisions ranging from under-8 to under-18 for boys and girls.
Barbarians crush Titans to open season
Two tries in the opening five minutes sent the Aurora Barbarians on their way to a 74-5 drubbing of the visiting Georgian Bay Titans in Toronto Rugby Union men’s under-18 season-opening action Wednesday night.
Naveen Neethling, Mark McKittrick and Carson Pollock led the Barbs’ assault with two tries. In all, 10 players scored at least one try against the first-year Titans.
