Shooters remain on top

The Vaughan Italia Shooters maintained their hold on first place in the Canadian Soccer League’s International Division by blanking the visiting North York Astros 2-0 Friday.

Jason De Thomasis scored the game’s first goal at the four-minute mark to give the Italia Shooters a 1-0 lead in the first half.

The Shooters iced the game in the second half when defender Gerard Ladiyou drove the ball home from 18 yards out.

With the win, played at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School field in Maple, the Shooters improved their record to 8-3-1.

The Astros, second in the National Division, fell to 5-5-2.

The Shooters resumed league play yesterday in Mississauga for an 8 p.m. game against Toronto Croatia, occupants of second place in the International Division with a 6-2-4 mark.
