Attractions
Markham Museum was established in 1971. A 25-acre facility, featuring both indoor and outdoor exhibits, is one of Ontario's best. Demonstrating over a century of pioneer history, Markham Museum plays host to Town of Markham Archives and Inter-cultural Festivals, in addition to the annual Art in the Park and the annual Rotary Car Show.
With over 17 restored heritage buildings, the museum certainly has something for everyone. The railway exhibit, which features a restored station and railway cars, allows visitors to board the train once used by Princess Margaret and Former Prime Minister John Deifenbaker. The land transportation exhibit features Ontario's largest horse carriage display, and the country store is a feast of sights and sounds.
For children under 10, the museum now has a new Tactile Lounge in which there are hands-on activities and dress-up clothes, in addition to a puppet theatre and mini-Wilson's store. The Hands-on House is also a favourite. Here, staff in historic costumes demonstrate pioneer life in a real log cabin where visitors can handle artifacts. A recent addition to the museum, the refurbished antique carousel is also a delight.
Attentive to portraying community life in the present as well as the past, Markham Museum has a gallery portraying different community groups in its “Doing Good Together” Exhibition. In 2007, the Museum showed an exhibit on Rwanda, designed and built by 28 teens from six different high schools in Markham.
Whether you are interested in an overnight camp-in, a guided tour, or simply a self-guided exploration of local history, Markham Museum makes history come alive.
