Attractions
One of the town's most-frequented parks, the Markham Skate Park is a 15,000 square foot hotspot for local youth. Equipped with fun boxes, stairs, flat banks, ledges, walls, and rails, the park's defining feature remains its 6-foot bowl. Appropriate for skateboarders and in-line skaters of all ages and skill levels, the park typically draws quite a crowd.
Young skaters can often be seen at the park armed with cameras to document their talents and trick attempts. Though most prefer skateboarding, the occasional in-line skater is not at all uncommon. Despite the fact that the park would be well suited to trick cycling as well, according to the rules bicycles are not permitted. To ensure safety, skateboarders and in-line skaters enjoy exclusive use of the park. The park has also been graced by professional skateboarders such as the Quicksilver Pro Team and is frequented by local sponsored amateurs, who enthusiastically proclaim the park their favourite practice location. Skaters come from all around the community to enjoy the facilities at the park, and its proximity to Markville Mall makes it a popular hangout.
Approved by the Markham Council in 2001, construction began on the park in 2003. Designed by the Community Skateboarder Focus Group, PGM Design, and Spectrum Skatepark Creations, the state-of-the-art facility opened to the public on May 7, 2005. Though all users are advised to wear helmets, pads, and all appropriate safety equipment, the park is unsupervised, so skaters use the park at their own risk. The park is open only during daylight hours because it is not lit for nighttime use.
The Markham Skate Park is located at the west end of the Centennial Community Centre on Bullock Drive at McCowan Road in Markham. For more information, call (905) 477-7000 ext. 2120, or visit
