The Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery, named for the Group of Seven's top portrait artist, complements picturesque Main Street Unionville with a subtle flair reminiscent of the works of Varley himself. The bright and beautifully decorated gallery features the works not only of Varley and other Group of Seven artists, but also the works of several renowned contemporaries.
In addition to displaying a wide array of watercolours, oil paintings, and drawings, the Varley Art Gallery offers group tours, art studio classes, lectures, and workshops. The Gallery also hosts an annual art auction, and plays an active role in community events for Victoria Day and the Unionville Festival. Currently, the Gallery is preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The tenth anniversary exhibition, entitled Portraits Into The Light, will feature 87 of F.H. Varley's original paintings. Despite the fact that Varley worked in Canada for over six decades, his portraits have never before been the focus of a major exhibition. The exhibition opened May 26, 2007.
The Mayor and members of council of the Town of Markham proclaimed May 22- May 27 Varley Art Gallery of Markham Week, but the Gallery is definitely worth a visit any week of the year. Portraits Into The Light will runs until September 3, 2007, at which point the exhibition will move on to Beaverbrook Gallery in Fredericton.
The Varley Art Gallery is located at 216 Main Street Unionville, at Carlton Road in Markham. For more information, call (905) 477-9511 or visit
