Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Elman W. Campbell Museum is gearing up for a lively season. Named after the local author and merchant who obtained the permanent site, the museum is the culmination of the efforts of the Newmarket Historical Society.
It is housed in a historic 1884 former Registry Office for North York. The only such nineteenth-century office still standing in York Region, the building also houses Heritage Newmarket and the Newmarket Historical Society archives. The displays chronicle the growth of the town, from when the first settlers established themselves in the area, up until the 1970s.
The Elman W. Campbell Museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, and admission is free.
Visitors can look forward to regular programs and special events taking place at the museum, though these events do often have an extra admission fee. Programs for school groups address a variety of topics ranging from pioneer living to traditional games and songs to local government history. The museum hosts Christmas, Easter, and Halloween celebrations each year.
In honour of having been open for a quarter-century, this year the Elman W. Campbell Museum will feature special exhibits, such as Bridal Elegance. This exhibit will display unusual, antique and vintage wedding gowns. In the fall, the museum will host a storytelling evening featuring Terry Boyle. In addition, the museum takes part in Doors Open Newmarket, which presents visitors with the chance to appreciate the architecture and décor.
The Elman W. Campbell Museum is located at 134 Main Street South in Newmarket. For more information, call (905) 953-5314 or email elmanmuseum@rogers.com.
