Located across from the scenic Holland River, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum is a cache of historic buildings where visitors can learn about pioneer living as it was in the Whitchurch Township. The museum was established in 1971 to educate the public about the history of the picturesque community. The facility features a barn, a pioneer log cabin, a Victorian barn house, and a brick schoolhouse believed to be the oldest still standing in southern Ontario outside of Toronto.
Admission to the museum is free, except during special events and programs, which remain free only to museum members. The museum plays host to a variety of such events each year. These events range from the Annual Antique and Classic Car Show to Hands-On History Saturdays for children. At these Hands-On History Saturdays, children have the opportunity to perform pioneer chores, help bake at the farmhouse kitchen, or complete lessons on a slate at the pioneer schoolhouse.
For adults, the museum also offers a range of heritage craft workshops. Whether you are an experienced quilter or simply curious about Battenburg lacemaking, the adult workshops have something to offer.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum is very closely involved with local schools, offering a variety of services both on and off the museum property. The educational programs are curriculum-based, and range from interactive tours on-premises to portable Edu-Kits designed for independent in-classroom use.
For those looking to learn about their family or local history, the museum also has a reference library, and its archives are full of valuable information. Indeed, the Whitchurch-Stouffville is an interesting attraction for all.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum is located at 14732 Woodbine Avenue in Vandorf. For more information, call (905) 727- 8954 or visit http://www.townofws.com/museum.asp.
