Attractions
Bringing art to life and enlivening art itself on Stouffville's Main Street, the Latcham Gallery is a public art gallery dedicated not only to exhibiting art, but also fostering artistic creativity and understanding in the community.
The Latcham Gallery is more an art facility than a simple gallery, offering summer camps, art classes, and workshops designed to help community members understand the ideas and techniques behind contemporary art.
Founded in 1979 by a group of local artists and visionaries, the gallery is named after Arthur Latcham, a philanthropist whose name may be seen on several buildings around the community, most famously as part of the Markham Stouffville Hospital. The gallery is open from Tuesdays through Saturdays and charges no admission fee. The gallery is also wheelchair accessible, making the services offered there available to all.
Exhibitions at the gallery are contemporary, and the gallery regularly features workshops designed to complement current exhibitions. For example, a recent exhibit of the photographic artwork of Lisa Klapstock was accompanied by a guided meditation workshop led by psychotherapist Charlene Jones.
The Latcham Gallery is also a hotspot during the annual Stouffville Strawberry Festival, holding a free “Family Fun Day” where art lovers of all ages are invited to come and make art of their own.
The gallery also offers classes for budding artists aged seven to eleven on Saturdays. The summer camps are also very popular with children. Taught by accomplished artists, children are taught art skills and artistic appreciation in both indoor and outdoor settings.
For adults, there is the Life Drawing Club, for artists interested in working from a live model. There is no instructor and artists work at their own pace, the club designed to foster individual growth and development.
The Latcham Gallery is located at 6240 Main Street in Stouffville. For more information, call (905) 640-8954 or visit www.latchamgallery.ca.
