Attractions
The David Dunlap Observatory, site of the largest optical telescope in Canada, is owned and operated by the University of Toronto, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The observatory sits on 180 acres of woods and grassland that was once a farm property. The pre-Confederation farmhouse, still standing, now functions as the residence for the observatory's director.
The facility features a 1.88-metre telescope and two Cassegrain reflector telescopes. Weather permitting, members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada set up their own telescopes outside on the lawn.
Staff and graduate students that make use of the observatory are currently studying a variety of topics ranging from black holes and double stars to the structure and evolution of galaxies. The observatory is a place of learning not only for students of the University of Toronto, but for the general public as well.
Tours are available for school groups, scouting and guiding groups, and more. The evening tours, offered on weekends during the summer months, are a special treat. After a presentation in the observatory's electronic classroom, the operation of the 1.88-metre telescope is demonstrated, and weather permitting, the dome is opened and visitors may view interesting celestial objects through the telescope.
The observatory also offers a summer lecture series with a University of Toronto professor. These evening lectures include informal discussions over refreshments and the opportunity to make observations through the giant telescope. Select visitors will also be lucky enough to spot the wild deer that run free on the observatory's property.
The David Dunlap Observatory is located at 123 Hillsview Drive in Richmond Hill. For more information, call (905) 884-9562 Ext. 232 or visit www.astro.utoronto.ca/DDO/.
