Attractions
Having celebrated its 50-year anniversary in August, 2007, Sibbald Point Provincial Park is a 225-hectare lakeside wonderland where there is something for everyone.
Located on the shores of Lake Simcoe, the park has sandy beaches, wooded hiking trails, picnic areas, and a rich cultural history, complete with historic landmarks.
For the 130 years before the land became a provincial park, the property was the home of the Sibbald family. Park visitors are free to explore the Eildon Hall Museum, a settlers' cabin, St. George's Anglican Church, and the burial sites of famous Canadian authors Stephen Leacock and Mazo de la Roche. The park provides hikers with guidebooks to assist hikers in taking advantage of all the park has to offer.
During the summer, the most popular activities include swimming, boating, fishing, and cycling, but the park is also a great place for bird watching and photography. For children, the park staff runs educational and recreational programs. There are fields for baseball, football, and soccer, and there are four playgrounds on the park property.
For those who would like more than a daytime visit, Sibbald Point has 604 campsites, all of which feature fireplaces and picnic tables. Nearly half of these sites also feature electrical outlets, and flush toilets, showers, and running water facilities are scattered generously throughout the park. The park store sells souvenirs, in addition to groceries, camping supplies, and anything else guests might need during their visit. During the winter, Sibbald Point is a popular destination for cross-country skiers, and a great place to spot wildlife.
On the whole, whether you're interested in woodpeckers, water sports, or local history, Sibbald Point has something to offer.
Sibbald Point Provincial Park is located at 26465 York Road 18 in Sutton West in the municipality of Georgina. For more information, call (905) 722-8061 or visit www.ontarioparks.com/english/sibb.html#.
