The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum, which is administered by the Ontario Soccer Association, celebrates the ongoing history of soccer in Canada, with a particular focus on Ontario.
At the museum, soccer artifacts and memorabilia are collected, interpreted, and displayed for the benefit of the community. Comprised mostly of donated items, the collection contains everything from balls and trophies to whistles and minute books. The displays illustrate how the game has changed, grown, and developed over the years.
Visitors can learn about the People's Shield, the Connaught Cup, and the National Challenge Trophy, all awards given to the champions of Canadian soccer in various years.
In addition, the museum keeps a detailed account of the evolution of soccer in each separate province, chronicling the story from before Confederation to the present.
Each year, the Hall of Fame selects new inductees based on independent research and public nominations. Inductions are made in two separate categories: Players and Builders.
Builders, who are also usually former players, include referees, coaches, and many others who have contributed to the growth of the game in Canada. The Players' category includes many prestigious soccer players, today including 12 goalkeepers. The first induction ceremony in 2000 saw the induction of 11 players and 11 builders, to get the Hall of Fame started. In 2003, the Hall of Fame added the Team of Distinction award, granting it to Team Canada 1888. This year, the Hall of Fame added another new distinction, the Pioneer award, designed to honour those individuals who contributed to the growth of soccer in the distant past.
The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum is sure to be a treat for all soccer players and soccer lovers, young and old alike. Admission is free, but the Hall of Fame graciously accepts donations.
The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum is located at 7601 Martin Grove Road in Vaughan. For more information, call (905) 264-9390 or visit
