The quaint hamlet of Jackson’s Point is rich in marine origins. Over the years its harbour has had many native canoes, sailing ships, steamers and recreational craft at its beautiful shores.
In 1819, an initial land grant of 1,000 acres was given to Navy Captain William Bouchier by the British government for his help in pushing back invading American forces in the War of 1812.
Not long after, Mr. Bouchier and his wife Amelia Jackson Bouchier turned the property over to William’s brother who later sold it to Amelia’s father, John Mills Jackson, for whom the village was later named. Jackson settled the land, transforming it into a successful wharf facility for schooners making their way on Lake Simcoe.
By 1877, as transportation improved with steamers and railroads, Jackson’s Point began to see an influx of seasonal residents as boarding houses, hotels, cottages and campgrounds opened along the accessible lakefont. It developed a repution for being a desirable resort region and was soon given the moniker of “Ontario’s first Cottage Country”.
Today the harbour continues its tradition of providing a safe refuge for boaters. It boasts 42 slips, shore power, private showers and washroom facilities as well as an adjacent park with picnic tables and a children’s play area.
Also close by are restaurants, supplies, shopping, entertainment and more, in a friendly historic setting.
Harbour attendants are on duty from 9 am - 10 pm every day from Victoria Day weekend to Labour Day and continue on weekends through Thanksgiving. Security is provided until 2 am.
