Opera York, established in 1995, is York Regions’s professional opera company.
The not-for-profit registered charitable arts organization makes its home at the St. Elizabeth Performing Arts Centre in Vaughan as well as presenting productions at Newmarket Theatre, Markham Theatre for Performing Arts, Leah Poslun’s Theatre, Famée Furlane and parks and outdoor festivals.
Stellar shows over the past 12 seasons have included The Magic Flute (Mozart), Madama Butterfly (Puccini), Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) and many more.
Opera York uses exclusively Canadian singers with an emphasis on Ontario and especially emerging York Region artists.
Its mission is to offer not only exemplary performances but also to educate and promote the art form within the community. Opera York has partnered with York Region public and separate school boards to introduce opera to young people through the Opera for Schools program. Adult education programs such as Through Opera Glasses are also available through some Municipal Culture and Recreation Departments.
Opera can be a costly form of entertainment limiting those who can experience it. Opera York’s Opera for Seniors, gives seniors a chance to take in affordable daytime concerts.
