What originated as a small private art collection has evolved into a wonderful Canadian legacy.
In 1952, 10 acres of land in Kleinburg were purchased by Robert and Signe McMichael who felt that the community “evoked images of the Canadian wilderness and a country retreat”. They proceeded to build a beautiful fieldstone and log residence on the property and began to collect paintings created by nature inspired artists such as the Group of Seven.
Then in 1965, the McMichaels donated their home, land and by this time, 194 paintings, to the Ontario government. The public gallery officially opened in 1966.
Today, the gallery spans 85,000 sq. ft. and has a permanent display of close to 6,000 exclusively Canadian masterpieces celebrating our nation’s distinctiveness. There are also special temporary shows throughout the year.
It boasts 13 exhibition galleries on four levels featuring works by the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, Inuit and First Nations painters, as well as a growing selection of contemporaries who have played a significant role in shaping the country’s artistic tradition.
What makes McMichael unique is that as well as captivating visitors inside with spectacular displays and the rustic charm of the original log home, the views outside are also breathtaking.
Set amidst 100 acres of wooded conservation land on the Humber River Valley, guests can enjoy outdoor paths, hiking trails, sculptures and the McMichael Cemetery where six Group of Seven artists are buried.
McMichael also offers a library and archives, theatre, shop, restaurant and programs and events for all ages including school tours, workshops, kids’ camps, lectures and hands on activities.
McMichael Canadian Art Collection is located at 10365 Islington Avenue and is open year-round daily from 10 am - 4 pm , closing only on Christmas day. For more information call 905-893-1121, toll free 1-888-213-1121 or visit
