The 1800s were a time of increased economic growth. With the development of towns, roads and farms came the destruction of many woodlands.
It was during this time that the York Regional Forest had many pine and maple trees cut down as well as soil plowed. Its future looked bleak.
Then in 1924, after much public protest, a Restoration Committee began intense tree planting to save the forest. Managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources, this initiative became one of North America’s most beneficial restorations of destitute land.
In 2000, it became the first publicly owned forest to be certified under the Forest Stewardship Council. This constitutes a third party audit to ensure the forest is being maintained in a sustainable manner.
Today the forest is operated by the Region of York and encompasses over 5000 acres on 18 tracts within the boundaries of Georgina, Whitchurch-Stouffville and East Gwillimbury. With 2000 acres of trails it is the perfect year-round destination for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and other recreational activities.
The Natural Heritage and Forestry Services hosts a variety of events for all ages. Discover the animals who call the forest home and learn more about their habitats. Learn how to identify different plant and tree species or about what tools are used to care for the forest.
Whether you just want to enjoy a leisurely stroll and take in the breathtaking scenery, or partake in a guided tour and learn more about this amazing ecosystem, there is something for everyone!
York Regional Forest headquarters is located at the Hollidge Tract on Highway 48, south of Vivian Road in Whitchurch-Stouffville. For more information on events or which area is best for your activity of choice, call 905-830-4444 or visit
